The Peach and the Snail

A peach on the ground, he was bruised, he was rotten

All was his friends had been eaten, and he felt forgotten

Feeling sad and defeated he was at the end of his limb

He could not see the future, he thought this was it for him

With tears in his eyes, he cried out with fear

“Oh why didn’t they pick me!” He thought no one would hear…

But along came a snail who was slithering by

He came to ask the peach, “You seem sad, I ask why?”

“I used to be ripe” the peach said to the snail

“The king of the peaches, the fruit holy grail,

Then along came the kids looking for peaches to pick,

But they didn’t even notice me, it made me feel sick

I sat there aging for what felt like weeks

Until I fell flat on my fuzzy plump cheeks”

“That’s quite a tale” the snail replied

“But it seems to me that you think you have died”

The peach looked up confusing hope in his eyes

“What are you saying?” Yelled the peach who imagined his demise

“Your friends who were eaten, they had fun while it lasted

But once they were finished, a garbage can is their casket

Don’t you see lucky fellow, this isn’t your end

Your new life is beginning, and it’s right around the bend

Soon you will be covered in dirt, and buried for hours

And then the cool liquid rain, will bring you fresh showers

From there you will rise and grow from the earth

Using the sun's power, your pit will give birth

Soaking wet you will sprout, up through your shell

Escaping blankets of dirt, that you knew so well”

“Out of the soil you will grow, using the air and the light

You will get big, you will get strong, increasing your height

From your view up above you will see the whole farm

You will create delicious fruit, with a magical charm

You will feed hungry children who tip on their toes

You will drink from the rain, and freeze when it snows

Kids will swing from your branches, they’ll call you the fun tree

You will live a grand life, and become a part of the country

Connecting people to flavor, you will act like a portal

They will tell tales of your fruit, you will become immortal

With all the incredible things you will do as a tree

Wishing to be eaten seems quite silly to me”

Ending #1:

“I never realized my future” Said the peach filled with awe

“But I probably should have guested, given all the trees that I saw”

The peach’s smile shined, bright like a sunbeam

“Thank you wise snail! But why did you help me?”

The snail looked up, with a twinkle so bright

“That's what I do man, help fruit see the light”

The snail gave a wink, and with that he was gone

The peach whispered goodbye, with a simple “so long”

Then he let out a sigh, and got ready for bed

Dreams of becoming a tree floating all in his head

Ending #2:

“I never realized my future” Said the peach filled with awe

“But I probably should have guested, given all the trees that I saw”

The peach grew a smile that was one of a kind

“I should get buried right now! I don’t wanna be behind!”

“Oh relax crazy peach” Laughed the one with the shell

“I made all that up, you're going to fruit hell”

Author's note:

Let your conscience be your guide,

the end of the poem is up for you to decide.
